This is a question I keep asking myself, especially now as geopolitical tensions rise and Europe faces enormous challenges. By “we,” I mean Europe and Germany. Having spent 26 years abroad, I observed much from a distance. And from this vantage point, it’s even more baffling to me how Europe and Germany could rely so heavily on the security guarantees of the United States.
Since the 1990s, I’ve been opposed to the presence of American troops stationed here. I never saw the point. The argument was always that they were here to protect us. In reality, the U.S. strategically positioned its bases to ensure quick access to the Middle East and Africa. Now, they are pulling their troops out, and with them, our so-called security guarantee evaporates. Trump’s election only accelerates this process.
That Russia would start a war was hard to predict, but the presence of a threat had long been apparent—a vague threat that has now become all too real. Some argue that Putin aims to advance further, perhaps into Poland or Moldova, where natural barriers provide a buffer for Russian territory against NATO encroachment. Putin appears genuinely threatened. This scenario is alarming because it could lead to the Baltic States falling under Russian influence or even being incorporated into a new “imperial Russian empire.” This must be prevented at all costs.
Europe Must Become Independent
Europe’s need for independence extends beyond security to encompass economic self-sufficiency. Europe is, in itself, a massive market. While we profit significantly from exports to China, Asia, and the United States, we cannot assume these trade relationships will last forever. Even here, we’ve missed the signs of the times.
We should have focused on strengthening our internal market long ago. Fewer imports from China, more production within Europe. It was evident that by building factories in China and outsourcing our products there, they would eventually acquire our technology. Inevitably, they have advanced that technology themselves—just look at electric vehicles or the solar energy sector. Meanwhile, our products are much more expensive. We failed to adapt.
The Need for European Unity
It’s time for Europe to assert its independence. We must foster closer integration and bridge the cultural and linguistic divides between our nations. Individual countries going it alone is counterproductive. In a world dominated by superpowers like the United States and China, with emerging players like India, we need a united Europe to operate on equal footing.
Security and Defense
A common security and defense policy is imperative. We can no longer rely on the United States, especially when their political decisions have become increasingly erratic. A unified European army is long overdue. Only then can we safeguard our interests and security independently.
Economic Independence and Innovation
Economically, we must shift gears. Instead of relying on global supply chains that crumble in crises, we should bring production back to Europe. This would secure jobs and reduce dependencies. Investing in innovation—renewable energy, artificial intelligence, and sustainable mobility—is essential. Acting now allows us to regain a competitive edge in technology.
Cooperation Over Nationalism
Cooperation within Europe must be strengthened. Nationalistic tendencies are a dead end. Common standards, shared goals, and a unified market are the keys to success. Only this way can we compete globally, defend our values, and maintain our standard of living.
Additional Reasons for European Independence
• Addressing Climate Change: A united Europe can implement more effective measures against climate change and set global standards.
• Promoting Social Justice: Joint efforts can reduce inequalities within Europe.
• Driving Digital Transformation: A unified Europe can remain competitive in the digital sector and achieve digital sovereignty.
• Taking Global Responsibility: As a strong union, we can exert greater influence in international organizations and advocate for peace and human rights.
A Wake-Up Call
We’ve hesitated for too long, clinging to outdated security nets. The world has changed, and we must change with it. It’s time to wake up and face these challenges head-on. Europe has the potential to take a leading role in the world—if we’re willing to collaborate and make bold decisions.
Now is the moment to set the course for the future. Let’s not be paralyzed by fear but seize the opportunities before us. The signs of the times call for change. It’s up to us to shape that change and lead Europe toward a secure and prosperous future.
What Needs to Be Done?
• Strengthen European Institutions: Grant more power to EU bodies to implement common decisions more effectively.
• Invest in Education and Research: Support science and education to boost innovation.
• Expand Renewable Energy: Achieve independence from fossil fuels and foreign energy sources.
• Foster Cultural Understanding: Promote exchange programs and joint projects to strengthen the European sense of unity.
• Adopt an Active Foreign Policy: Present a united front on the international stage to represent European interests effectively.
It’s incomprehensible to me why some politicians—and voters—fail to see the signs of the times and choose a future as isolated nations outside of Europe. Where would Hungary or Poland be without EU funding and the support of the Schengen market? Just look at our neighbors in the UK, grappling with the consequences of Brexit.
It’s our responsibility to secure the future of Europe—and our own. Let’s not allow ourselves to miss the signs of the times once again.
